SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. – The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) is investigating after a toddler was allegedly accidentally left in a car parked at a school.
SCSO was called to South Sumter High School on Friday around 4:18 p.m. on reports of a child’s death.
An investigation revealed that a 15-month-old child had been accidentally left in a vehicle parked outside the school.
The child was with a family member and was supposed to be taken to kindergarten, but the family member allegedly forgot and went to middle school.
On the same day, the body of a child was found in the vehicle.
The investigation is ongoing in cooperation with the Medical Examiner’s Office and the State Attorney’s Office.
“This is a tragic situation and our hearts go out to the child’s family,” SCSO said in a news release.
