A Utah man died in a road accident, and the driver who hit him washed his car at a nearby car wash and then fled the scene.

According to A number With press releases of the Ogden Police Department – located north of Salt Lake City – a man identified as 21-year-old Christian Hernandez Palma struck 63-year-old Stirling Kelso while she was cleaning the parking lot of a car wash on Wednesday at approximately 5 p.m. local time, October 30.

Kelso was pronounced dead at the scene, and police said Palma fled before officers arrived. According to police, Kelso was not a car wash employee. It is unclear why he was cleaning the parking lot.

Local news site KSL.com reported that surveillance video shows a gray Lexus entering a car wash when the driver “struck a pedestrian who was lying on the ground cleaning the area,” according to a police booking affidavit.

The website added that Palma told police he then drove into the bay and began washing the car just meters from Kelso’s body. “He was scared and didn’t know what to do,” Palma told police.

A bystander approached Palma to ask if he knew what happened, to which Palma replied he didn’t know.

A statement obtained by KSL.com shows that Palma also stopped to talk to the driver of the truck, which had the company’s logo on it. Police located the company based on its logo and found Palma’s Lexus in the company’s parking lot. The car had damage to the front bumper and undercarriage “consistent with a collision between a car and a pedestrian,” and police arrested Palma shortly afterwards.

Ogden police said in a news release that Palma was booked into the Weber County Jail on several charges, including hit-and-run, driving without a license and failure to maintain safe and proper observation.
