Strathcona County issues fines and removes vehicles from roads for safety reasons

In October, a safety enforcement effort in Strathcona County took 40 vehicles off the road for various violations.

Between October 8 and 10, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) inspected 66 commercial vehicles. Only 17 percent passed the inspection, the county said in a news release Monday.

“Hundreds of commercial vehicles travel on county roads every day, so their compliance with commercial vehicle requirements is critical to the safety of our roads and everyone who uses them,” said Vito DiSciglio, manager of enforcement services.

CVSA officers looked for various safety requirements, including tire inflation, secured cargo, valid driver’s license, emergency exits and adequate lighting.

Drivers who fail the inspection are obliged to make repairs and pay any fines. Fines can range from $324 up to a vehicle stop to check whether the vehicle is safe to drive on the road.

“We don’t do inspections just to impose penalties,” DiSciglio said.

“By identifying issues before they become problems, we can prevent potential accidents and keep everyone traveling on our roads safe.”
