Cardiff Uni provides significant funding for health research

Cardiff University research into women’s health, mental health and cancer is to be among the key areas of research that will see £39.5 million of Health and Care Research Wales funding made available over the next five years.

Health and care research in Wales announced research and development infrastructure funding for 17 research centers across Wales, including five new organisations. The Welsh Applied Virology Unit, the Center for Social Care and Artificial Intelligence Science, Women’s Health Research Wales and the Visual Services Research Center will be based at Cardiff University, and the National Suicide and Self-Harm Prevention Center will be based at Swansea University.

The investment includes funding for flagship centers such as the Wales Cancer Research Centre, the National Center for Mental Health and the Children’s Social Care Research and Development Center Partnership, and will increase academic capacity and the amount of high-quality research taking place in Wales.

The funding has been awarded in two categories – sustainability awards, for currently funded groups to sustain effective practice models and support trajectories towards self-sufficiency, and catalytic awards, to increase capacity and capacity in areas of health and care needs and emerging become the Welsh research force.

Research has a key role to play in helping us achieve our goal of a healthier Wales. This is an important investment in new and exciting areas of research, including women’s health; suicide and self-harm prevention and artificial intelligence – over the next five years I hope it will provide real evidence that will help shape services and care for people across Wales.

Michael Bowdery, interim director at Health and Care Research Wales and head of programmes, research and development at the Welsh Government, said: “This announcement represents a significant investment in our funded infrastructure in Wales over the next five years and reflects our ambition to develop research capacity tailored to unmet health and social needs in key policy areas.

“Our approach to providing this funding is based on two criteria – firstly, where there is a clear and compelling need for research and evidence across Welsh Government, the NHS and the social care system in Wales; and second, when there is clearly a strong need or emerging research opportunities and opportunities in the field.

“These centers embody the principle that research can impact people’s health and well-being, and we are pleased to support their work in this area.”
