The Rafah border crossing was re -opened on Saturday after closing in May 2024, enabling the movement of wounded Palestinians from Gaza to Egypt. The transition is an important entry point for humanitarian aid in the entrance to Gaza, but the Israeli army took over the Palestinian side last year.

The Ministry of Health Hamas in Gaza said that 50 patients and 53 companions crossed the border on February 1 to receive treatment in Egypt.

“From medical files 50 was approved by Egypt. We hope that this number will increase, “said Muhammad Zaqout, director of Gaza Hospitals.

“We now have 6,000 cases ready to be transferred and over 12,000 cases that are very much needed for treatment.”

Last Monday, the European Union agreed to restart its monitoring mission at the Rafah intersection, from 18 EU and local staff, including the Police Security Department from Italy, Spain and France.

“The mission was issued at the request of Israel and Palestinians, with the full support of Egypt,” said the Italian government in a statement that added, “the main goal is to coordinate and facilitate everyday transit to 300 wounded and wounded and sick.”
