ITHACA, NY (WBNG) – a state controller New York Thomas P. Dinapoli announced an accusation of a woman from Itaka for theft of state retirement payments of her deceased husband.

The controller office found on January 30, Sharon Collins, 73, from Ithac, was accused of in the City Court in Lansing on charges of the great theft of the fourth degree. The office added that Collins allegedly stolen $ 69,481 in state pension payments intended for her deceased husband.

Officials announced that between August 2020 to June 2022, 23 pension payments in the amount of USD 69,481.63 were deposited on the joint bank account of her deceased husband.

Collins’s husband retired in 2014 as a facility manager at New York universities in Cornell. Officials added that he chose a single life allowance for his retirement, which stopped after his death in 2020. However, his wife did not inform New York and the local pension system of his death.

When the state of New York and the local pension system or Nyslrs was informed about her husband’s death, he stopped all payments and tried to recover the funds immediately.

According to the controller’s office, when Collins learned about Nyslrs’s efforts to recover funds, she allegedly withdrew $ 26,408 from the account.
