Each year in the United States, more than 20,000 pregnancies end in stillbirth. These losses are not inevitable. At least 1 in 4 stillbirths in the U.S. are likely preventableAnd for pregnancies lasting 37 weeks or longer, almost half of stillbirths are preventable, according to a key study.

“Before the Breath,” a new feature-length documentary from ProPublica, weaves together the stories of three mothers who lost their babies to stillbirth and are now working to achieve a safer pregnancy. Inspired by Groundbreaking reportage by Duaa Eldeibawhich was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, this intimate, galling and ultimately hopeful film sheds light on the aftermath of stillbirth.

Other rich countries have done so, including the Netherlands, Ireland and Australia great progress in reducing the number of stillbirths. But data paucity, awareness, autopsies AND tests in the US hampers prevention efforts.

“Before a Breath” breaks the silence surrounding the US stillbirth crisis and shows that change is possible. We hope this will be a catalyst for critical conversations between expectant parents, healthcare providers, policymakers, and bereaved families.

From the beginning of 2025, the film will be broadcast throughout the country. If you or someone you know wants to get involved – by attending or organizing a screening, bringing a film to your college, medical school or hospital, or collaborating in any other way – we want to hear from you. We are incredibly grateful to the many families, healthcare providers, researchers, and supporters who make our work possible. Now we need you and your communities’ help to spread the word.
