A Chhatra Dal leader was shot in the knee allegedly following an argument with another person over drug consumption in Begumganj upazila of Noakhali.

The injured man was identified as Amanullapur Chhatra Dal union general secretary Ibrahim Masum, 27, said Liton Dewan, in-charge of Begumganj police station.

OC Liton said the injured youth was undergoing treatment at Noakhali General Hospital, which has 250 beds. No case has yet been opened regarding this incident.

The incident took place yesterday (October 29) evening at the Kachihata market in the trade union’s branch No. 1.

Daudur Rahman Farhan, member-secretary of Begumganj Upazila Chhatra Dal, said that local youth (former BNP worker) Sohel came from behind a shop in Kachihata market after reportedly consuming drugs in the morning.

At that time, Union Chhatra Dal leader Ibrahim Masum was sitting in front of this shop. When he felt this, he questioned Sohel, which led to an argument, Daudur added.

Masum tried to beat up Sohel for taking drugs, but later released him when some people from the same area called Masum and assured that the matter would be sorted out in the evening in the presence of everyone.

Later in the evening, Masum was attacked while sitting in a shop in Kanchihata Market. He then went to the pharmacy to get first aid when several boys attacked him again and shot him in the knee, Daudur said.

He also claimed that accused Sohel was previously involved in BNP politics but after August 5, he became involved in Shibiru politics.

However, condemning the incident and denying any involvement of Shibir, District Jamaat Amir Ishaq Khandkar told The Business Standard: “We strongly protest against the reports published in some of the leading local newspapers of the country regarding Shibir and Chhatra Dal.”

He also said that there was no one from Shibiru. Terrorists and drug addicts injured the Chhatra Dal leader. It was a local drug problem. Any Chhatra Dal-Shibir clash is out of the question.
