Anna Kendrick donates her salary from her directorial debut to charity

Anna Kendrick just left Woman of the Hours in our eyes “woman of the year” after the actress and director revealed that she “didn’t make any money” on her directorial debut after donating her salary to charity.

Based on the true story of a woman who works with one of America’s most famous serial killers on a 1970s dating show. Woman of the Hours delves into the grim story of Rodney Alcala from the perspective of his victims.

The film, directed by Kendrick, goes to great lengths to paint a picture of the social challenges each victim faced at the time, and how these beliefs allowed Alcala to avoid prosecution for as long as he did.

But although Kendrick initially agreed to star in the film as Dating game participant Cheryl Bradshaw, a long delay in securing funding meant two years passed before an official start date was given. However, at that time the film was left without a director and that’s when Anna Kendrick volunteered.

Care must be taken to approach the film in a representational manner women’s courage who fell victim to Alcala, Kendrick also drew on her personal experiences of being in forced relationship – a revelation that the actress shared only recently.

In an interview with GuardianKendrick revealed that he subscribes to both Woman of the Hours and her previous film, Alice, honeyinspired her to honor the stories of her heroes.

“Everything else I was doing at the time just wouldn’t let me connect. And suddenly two really dark scenarios appear, the subject matter of which is very personal. I don’t think it was a coincidence that I responded to them.

She then described her own experiences and how women react to men and show discomfort or fear in the presence of men, before providing tips for more specific parts of the video.

“The only comment I had for the writer was: ‘You give women too much freedom of action,'” she says. “Which sounds weird because writers to want give your characters independence. They are constantly forced to do this. But there is a strange, secret language between women. There are some things I wouldn’t dare say to a man if we were alone, like, “Hey, you’re making me feel uncomfortable.” It’s really good for Ian that he wanted to give women that freedom, but I felt it would have been more honest if they didn’t express exactly what was going on inside them.”

Kendrick detailed the seven-year relationship in a recent episode Call her, daddyin which she talked about the complex journey she went through due to her own history of abuse.

“I was reading all the articles and I was like, ‘It doesn’t look like…yeah, some of it looks like they describe it, but not quite,'” she explained, after expressing how difficult it was to determine the reality of her relationship.

“I was in a situation where I loved and trusted this person more than myself. So when this person tells you that you have a distorted sense of reality, that you are impossible and that everything you think is happening is not really happening, your life becomes complicated very quickly,” she explained.

For Kendrick Woman of the Hours was as much about coming to terms with one’s own trauma as it was about creating a path for meaningful discussion around the authentic experiences of Alcala’s victims, as well as focusing on their own humanity.

In an interview with SiriusXM about Woman of the HoursAnna Kenrick explained that it was this realization that led her to give up her own salary for the film.

“When I realized, ‘Oh, there’s going to be an exchange of money,’ I asked myself, ‘Do you feel gross about this?'” Kendrick explained to the hosts. “And I did it. So I don’t make money from the film. The money went to RAINN and the National Center for Victims of Crime.”

“I think it’s still a complicated area, but it felt like at least… something I should do.”
