Community response

Riddelle Reed has lived on Milwaukee’s north side for 50 years. But he said he had never seen anything like it.

“I heard about eight, nine, ten shots. There were an awful lot of them,” Reed said.

On Tuesday evening, just before 10, he was walking his dog when he heard gunshots followed by a group of children running behind them.

“One of the shooters had been shot and was lying there on the ground,” Reed recalled. “They should have been home getting ready for school or something.”

The shooting occurred just hours after the announcement in Milwaukee County gun violence prevention initiative called “Advanced Room”. The federally funded fellowship connects mentors with youth, providing check-in and development opportunities.

“They need to put the guns down and try to get an education,” Reed said.

In a statement to FOX6 News, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley said in part: “I am calling on community members to cool the temperature and strive for peace. Preventing violence will not be possible without all of us, especially our adults, providing mentorship and serving as positive examples for our youth.”
