Authorities say the driver acted alone in an “evil act” that killed 14 people

Investigators are looking into whether there is a military connection between New Orleans attack suspect and crash driver Cybertruck explosion outside the Trump hotel in Las Vegas, two law enforcement sources familiar with the matter told NBC News.

A driver in New Orleans is dead after shooting at police, and a body was found in a Cybertruck after the vehicle exploded and caught fire, authorities say.

However, it is unclear whether the drivers overlapped during military service or elsewhere. Sources say this was a potentially significant investigative thread.

Officials, including President Joe Biden, say the suspect in the New Orleans attack was a Texas resident and an Army veteran.

Two law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation told NBC News that the suspect in the Las Vegas explosion had prior military experience, although they provided no details at the time, emphasizing that the investigation was still ongoing.

The person found dead in the Cybertruck incident has not been publicly identified by law enforcement.

The Las Vegas police chief said the vehicles used in both incidents were rented through the car-sharing app Turo. Turo said he is fully cooperating with investigators.

Biden said last night that investigators were looking into whether the two incidents could be linked.

“We are tracking the explosion of a Cybertruck outside the Trump hotel in Las Vegas,” Biden said at the time.

“Law enforcement and the intelligence community are also investigating this case, including whether there is any possible connection to the New Orleans attack,” he said.
