All lanes are now open after fatal pedestrian crash shuts down I-10 West in downtown El Paso

All lanes of Interstate 10 West are open after a fatal crash led to an extended closure.

According to the El Paso Police Department, one person was killed in a pedestrian crash just before 6 a.m. Wednesday at the I-10 West and Piedras Street exit. Special road traffic inspectors arrived on site. Police did not provide any further information about the accident.

Traffic was restored as the lanes reopened before noon, EPPD on X reported.

Traffic towards the Copia and Cotton exits was diverted, initially with no clearing time available, EPPD wrote on X. Drivers were advised to seek an alternative route to avoid the area under investigation.

As support continued into Wednesday morning, TxDOT El Paso said the investigation into the crash could take some time.

“This is expected to be an extended closure pending an investigation. Please take extra time, reconsider your route, stay calm and drive like a Texan: nice, courteous and safe.” TxDOT published on X on Wednesday just before 9 a.m.
