According to ESPN Eli Lederman“Smith’s firing comes as Michigan State has stepped up efforts in recent weeks to lure LSU quarterback and top wide receiver prospect Bryce Underwood to join the Wolverines at the end of the season.”

On3’s Pete Nakos reported that Michigan State is willing to offer Underwood Overall perspective #1 in the class of 2025, a $5 million NIL package.

According to On3/The Wolverine’s EJ Holland, Smith’s father, Dan Smith, gave more insight into the decision.

“Circumstances have changed and we believe the best option for the future is to open his recruitment.”

Smith has had contact with other schools and it looks like he could easily find a landing spot elsewhere.

“We’ve been approached by a lot of schools and we’re ready to take him on,” said Dan, Smith’s father, per Keegan Pope with On3. Pope added that “Clemson, Penn State and Wisconsin are noteworthy schools.”

As for Underwood, he previously chose LSU over Michigan and Alabama, among others.

“LSU felt like home,” Underwood said in January, per Hayes Fawcett with On3. “The relationship I have built with the coaching staff is unbreakable. I’ve never felt a better atmosphere than at LSU. It’s unreal.”

However, Smith’s decision naturally calls into question whether Underwood could transfer here to Michigan. If so, this is a serious blow to the Wolverines, especially since the defending national champions have had huge problems in attack this year (111 out of 134 Division I-FBS teams in terms of scoring).

For now, Underwood is still with the LSU Tiger, but all eyes are now on Michigan to see if the No. 1 recruit makes a change.
