One Piece finally reveals Ryokugyu and Fujitora’s past

One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda shed light on the past of Admirals Ryokugyu and Fujitora, here’s what you need to know.

The aftermath of the Marineford Summit War brought major changes to the world of One Piece. Fleet Admiral Sengoku left his position, hoping that Kuzan would take over his duties, but Akainu was outraged by this decision.

He and Kuzan fought for ten days for the position of admiral of the fleet. Akainu won the battle and took up his position, while Kuzan left and later joined the Blackbeard Pirates. After the time skip, two new admirals were introduced to fill the vacancy.

The One Piece manga volumes are popular in SBS (Shitsumon o Bosh Suru), which translates to I answer questions. This is a special column that presents Eiichiro Oda replies to fan letters on various topics. The questions are mostly about things that people find unclear about One Piece, but they can be about anything.

One-part volume 110 will be released on November 1, 2024 and will include new questions and answers. The questions and answers were translated and shared on the popular One Piece fan account on Twitter/X, and one of them reveals the past of Admirals Aramaki and Fujitora.

The question is: “Odacchi! Garchu! Please tell us about Fujitora and Ryokugyu’s former activities! (Before they became Marine Admirals.)”

Oda replies, “Okay. Ah… Just when they became responsible for the defense of countries affiliated with the World Government under a system called the “World Military Draft” these two were selected by the Marines.

“Ryokugyu: Aramaki comes from South Blue. He was a police officer from the Kingdom of Taya and caused a big incident involving a woman, for which he was thrown into prison.

“His reputation as a man of extraordinary strength reached the government. He was drafted into the Marine Corps and immediately received a special promotion to the rank of admiral.

“Fujitora: Issho is from West Blue. He suffered losses at a gambling house on Twin Snake Island, and the place where he worked as a security guard was purchased by the World Government for a large sum of money.

“Issho was a former military commander of the Defense in the (celestial) Kingdom of Aoi, which once existed on the Grand Line. Aoi’s kingdom was destroyed in the war and he became a notable war criminal. The World Government will eventually be informed of this fact.”

Ryokugyu never talked about his past in the original manga, but Fujitora is certainly a more complex character. In the Dressrosa Act, he revealed that he blinded himself because there were things he preferred not to see.

This may be related to the war that destroyed the Aoi Kingdom. Moreover, he is different from those admirals who blindly follow orders – he sets his own goals and will continue to fight against the corruption and injustice of the World Government.
