The victims of the Van Reenen Pass accident have been identified

On Monday, 17 people, including seven children, died in a collision between a truck, a minibus and a passenger car.

It is known that the minibus lost control of the vehicle and drove into the opposite lane.

The search for the truck driver who fled the scene is ongoing and he has been identified as a 37-year-old from Zimbabwe.

The province’s Department of Transport says the victims of the crash were travelers from the Eastern Cape.

Spokesman Ndabezinhle Sibiya said a team was assessing the condition of the daughter, who was the only survivor of the crash.

“MEC Siboniso Duma asked the HOD and the entire team to visit the brave girl in hospital.

“We are comforted that he is recovering. We thank healthcare workers for providing high-quality healthcare.

“We would like to express our sincerest condolences to the families of the deceased.

“At this stage we would like to point out that according to the owner of the minibus taxi, the families of the deceased have been identified and notified of their deaths.

The owner and the Uncedo Taxi Association are preparing family members to travel to Ladysmith to identify their loved ones.”
