OCSO sheriff says deputies justified their actions after officer-involved shooting in Pine Hills

Orange County Sheriff John Mina said his deputies’ actions were justified the deputy was involved in a shooting on Wednesday.

Shots were heard around 1 p.m

“I heard about three to four shots,” Vincent Grant said.

Grant said once everything calmed down, he went to investigate.

“I saw a gentleman lying in the bottom of the pickup truck and I could see he had a gunshot wound,” Grant said. “So they put him in the ambulance and took him away.”

According to Mina, the incident occurred as a result of two drive-by shootings a few hours earlier. Both incidents took place in front of a house on San Jose Boulevard.

A woman who lives in the house said her cameras helped officers quickly identify and track the suspect. He was less than five miles away, in front of a house on Montague Place.

When deputies arrived, Mina said a group of people were standing nearby, including a 16-year-old suspect who was holding a gun.

“Our deputies gave several commands and then shot the suspect,” Mina said. “Another patient was hit in the foot, his injuries are not life-threatening. He was transported to hospital. As far as I know, he’s fine. He’s 24 years old.”

Mina said he reviewed footage from officers’ body cameras.

“I saw one person on body-worn camera footage clearly holding a firearm…he knew we were representing law enforcement. Our deputies were in full uniform, so you have to obey law enforcement orders, and you shouldn’t do drive-by shootings,” Mina said. “If you comply with law enforcement orders and surrender peacefully, you will not be shot.”

The names of the people involved in the case and the charges brought against them have not yet been disclosed. Mina also said they are still working to determine a motive.

“We anticipate multiple charges against several individuals, both in connection with the drive-by shootings and the Montague Place incident,” Mina said.
