Authorities in northern France say two people have been killed and 20 others injured in a cold snap that brought snow and ice to northern Europe.

PARIS – Authorities in northern France said Thursday that two people were killed and 20 others injured in a cold snap that brought snow and ice to northern Europe.

Authorities in the northern region said in a statement that one of the dead slipped on the pavement and hit his head violently. The statement said the second person had no permanent address and was found dead in the city of Valenciennes.

The first frosty weather appeared on Wednesday. The statement said emergency services were called to deal with road accidents, people falling in snow and ice, floods and other emergencies.

Across the English Channel, severe weather warnings were in place across the UK, where temperatures will drop to -16 degrees Celsius (3.2 degrees Fahrenheit) in some places later on Thursday.

Manchester Airport briefly closed its runways on Thursday morning due to heavy snowfall, before reopening it. Britain’s weather forecaster, the Met Office, warned of more disruption to road and rail traffic in some parts, as well as the potential for accidents in icy areas. Snow and ice warnings were also in place in northern Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The days are full of snow, sleet and downpours disturbed at airports, railways and roads across the country, causing flight delays and cancellations during the busy holiday season.
