Teenager arrested after exchanging gunfire with police in southeast Columbus

Columbus police said a 17-year-old boy was the victim of an assault after firing multiple shots at officers.

Officers responded to the 1000 block of Lockbourne Road around 11 a.m. after a 911 caller said her boyfriend had a gun and was threatening to shoot her. At one point she jumped out of a window on the second floor.

Columbus police said that within five minutes of the 911 call, officers found the teenager armed with a rifle in the back of the house. According to reports, within seconds of noticing police, he fired several shots and then fled.

More officers joined in and found the teenager in an alley west of Lockbourne Road. CPD said the teen fired more shots, striking the police car.

Officers fired an unknown number of times and the teen ran to the rear of a home in the 1200 block of East Columbus Street, where officers were able to apprehend him. However, he did not have any weapons on him.

A gun that police believe may have belonged to the teenager was found in a yard in the 1000 block of Studer Avenue. A helicopter atop a structure near the scene of the arrest spotted a rifle believed to belong to the teenager.

No officers were injured, and the teenager was treated and later released to the hospital. The person calling 911 was taken to the hospital for treatment after jumping from a second-story window.

Police said the teenager would face assault charges and that more charges could be brought against him.
