Munshiganj woman found hanging with injury marks: In-laws claim she committed suicide, mother says she was murdered

Today (January 10), a woman was found hanging from the ceiling of her in-laws’ room with injury marks in Gazaria, Munshiganj.

The deceased was identified as Mahmuda Akhtar, 38, wife of Imran of Aralia village of the Baluakandi upazila. During their nine years of marriage, they had two daughters and one son.

Mahmuda’s mother claims she was murdered, and her in-laws claim she committed suicide.

Commander of the Gazaria police station, md. Anwar Alam Azad, told The Business Standard that the body is currently at the police station.

“There are traces of injuries on the deceased’s body. The investigation will show whether it was murder or suicide,” the prosecutor added.

According to Mahmud’s neighbors, Mahmud and her husband often quarreled for various reasons. On Friday, they argued over a family matter.

Shortly after the incident, Mahmuda’s body was found hanging from the ceiling fan in their bedroom. She was rushed to Gazaria Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor on duty pronounced her dead.

They also claimed that her husband and his elder brother fled the scene after putting her in the van.

In an interview with TBS, Mahmud’s mother, Marzina Begum, said: “Today around 9:30 my son-in-law called me. While holding me on the phone, he started beating my daughter. Around 10:00 my daughter was beaten again. I believe she was then killed.”

“Her body was hanged to make it look like a suicide,” Marzina said.

Marzina also claimed that both Mahmuda’s husband Imran and his elder brother Wasim did not take her to the hospital, which proves that they killed her.

Meanwhile, Wasim, in a telephone conversation, denied the allegations and said, “Mahmuda got angry easily. My little brother did his best to get used to it. This morning she tried to commit suicide once by closing the door to her room, but we saved her.

“After some time, she closed the doors and windows again. “We then broke the window and found her hanging from the ceiling fan.”

Locals reported that Mahmuda married Imran in 2016. Her husband is a Saudi expatriate and recently returned home for a vacation.
