Seven injured in chain reaction accident near Doniphan

DONIPHAN, Neb. (KSNB) – Slick roads were a factor in a chain reaction crash that occurred Thursday evening on Highway 281 north of Doniphan.

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office said the crash occurred just before 7 p.m. at the intersection of Clarice Street. The sheriff said the driver was exiting the Dollar General parking lot and struck a semi-truck heading south. This started a chain reaction involving four other vehicles.

The crash closed the northbound lane of 281 from the Doniphan traffic light one mile north to Cedar View Road.

Five ambulances from Grand Island and Doniphan were called to the scene and took the injured to local hospitals. The sheriff said a total of seven people were injured, including one with life-threatening injuries.

The sheriff’s office said weather conditions were a factor in the crash.

In its Friday morning news release, the sheriff’s office did not provide the names of those involved in the case or whether there were any charges or arrests. The sheriff’s office continues to investigate.

Following a similar accident, a Hall County deputy was providing traffic control nearby. The deputy’s passenger car was struck by an oncoming vehicle and caused significant damage. The deputy was not injured. The State Patrol is investigating the crash.
