In the hunt for a centre-back, a number of options have been explored with an urgent need identified

TEAMtalk can reveal that Rangers have their eye on a new centre-back to solve their current problems and catch up with rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.

Rangers are having a very difficult season and are 15 points behind Celtic in the title race, which has put pressure on current manager Philippe Clement.

The club is trying to help by bringing in some bodies this month, and sources have shared some of their plans.

Gers are in desperate need of defensive reinforcements and sources have confirmed they are working on bringing in a new centre-back this window. Many agents were contacted in search of a target player to loan.

It is also understood that the club would prefer to sign a younger player on loan this month, with the possibility of making him a permanent loan in the summer. They are also looking for experienced central defenders who they can sign in the summer for a good price or as part of a pre-contract agreement.

A good example of this is Dinamo defender Samy Mmaee, who was looked at by Rangers earlier this month. There was a chance he could leave the team for an extended period of time, but new manager Fabio Cannavaro plans to use him in his squad.

The guards want to push Dessers out

It is widely known that Rangers do not have much money to spend and will have to let players go this month if they are to bring in new faces. One player who they are striker Cyriel Dessers is trying to sell.

The 30-year-old does not have a good reputation among Rangers fans and despite scoring 34 goals since arriving at the club in the summer of 2023, his performances have been well below expectations. The club wanted to sell him last summer and hired intermediaries to find a deal.

There were a number of Serie A teams interested but no offers were forthcoming, so he remained at Ibrox that season. He is now aware that the club wants to sell him, and sources have confirmed that he is ready to leave.

Rangers will then look to strengthen their attacking options, which is likely to happen later this month with the likes of Dessers moving on. Hamza Igamane is currently considered by the club as their number one striker and the club wants to bring in a player who will help him score goals.

Rangers Summary: Bonus Pressure On

Premier League teams are pressuring Rangers to sign Igamane due to his good form at the club.

TEAMtalk is aware of this Everton are one of the teams pushing for an 11-goal striker.

Meanwhile, sources say Leeds player Joe Gelhardt has been on the radar recently.
