Brooklyn shooting: 50-year-old in critical condition after being shot by NYPD in Canarsie

CANARSIE, Brooklyn — A police-involved shooting left a 50-year-old man in Brooklyn in critical condition.

The incident occurred on the Carnasie section at around 9:45 p.m. on Friday.

According to officials, officers were responding to shots fired in the area of East 80th Street and Flatlands Avenue.

Officers were already in an unmarked vehicle in the area when they saw a man leaving the grocery store.

The man apparently noticed the officers and started running away. At least two officers pursued the man on foot, while the others pursued him in their patrol car.

Police say the man hid behind a tree, turned around and pointed a gun at a police sergeant.

“The officers verbally identified themselves and gave the man numerous verbal commands, which he did not comply with,” NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera said at a news conference.

At least four officers fired at the man, hitting him in the stomach.

The suspect was transported to nearby Brookdale Hospital.

The officers seized two weapons at the scene. One of them was a ghost gun that was found in a grocery store.
