Man hanged upside down and beaten on suspicion of stealing a bicycle in Rajasthan

On Saturday, police said a man was hanged upside down from a tree and brutally beaten by a group of people on charges of stealing a bicycle in Rajasthan’s Barmer district.

The incident took place on Friday in Bhakharpura village in Gudha Malani district when a man, Shravan Kumar, who is a Dalit, was released on bail in a separate theft case.

In a statement, Barmer Superintendent of Police (SP) Narendra Singh Meena said Kumar was arrested on December 29 after he was caught stealing a bicycle from a local fair.

Sources said that a few days ago, after Kumar was released on bail, the villagers accused him of stealing another bike. However, the man denied the new allegations against him.

On Friday, villagers grabbed Kumar, tied his hands and hung him upside down from a tree. “The villagers then beat up the man. They also took a video of the attack which has now gone viral,” the source said.

Gudamalani Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sukhram Bishnoi said a case was registered based on a complaint lodged by the victim and the police took note of the 53-second video.

“On Friday, Kumar was allegedly attacked by villagers on charges of theft. He had previously been booked on another theft case. A case has been registered based on a complaint lodged by the victim and a detailed investigation is underway,” Bishnoi said. .
