Items not allowed on Capitol grounds on Inauguration Day 2025

If you plan to attend in person, please be careful not to take these items with you or you may be asked to leave the event.

WASHINGTON – With Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration on Monday, emotions are running high as the nation prepares for this historic event.

To ensure everyone’s safety during the ceremony on the West Front of the Capitol, the Capitol Police Board has created a list of items that will not be allowed on the Capitol grounds. If you’re planning to attend, here’s what you need to know to ensure the experience runs smoothly and smoothly.

Prohibited items:

  • Aerosol and non-aerosol sprays
  • Alcohol
  • All bags, backpacks, wheeled bags and suitcases (over size limits 12″ x 12″ x 5″)
  • Ammunition
  • Animals (other than service animals)
  • Balloons
  • Balls
  • Beverages (including bottled and boxed liquids)
  • Bicycles
  • Bulletproof armor
  • Camera cases
  • Camping and climbing equipment (tents, ropes, hooks)
  • Cans and bottles
  • Chairs (except those used for mobility)
  • Chemicals (spilled batteries, paint, fake blood, etc.)
  • Commercial audio/video equipment and stands
  • Coolers
  • Devices/equipment that disrupt or disrupt communications
  • Duffel bags
  • Explosives of any kind (including fireworks, smoke bombs)
  • Firearm
  • Flammable liquids
  • Glass, thermal and metal containers
  • Handcuffs, zippered ties, elastic cuffs
  • Illegal substances (including marijuana)
  • Knives, blades, box cutters, sharp objects (regardless of size)
  • Laptops/tablets/iPads
  • Laser lights and laser pointers
  • Leatherman or similar tools
  • Fluids of any kind (except medicines)
    Note: This restriction applies only to Capitol grounds; Water will be provided for ticketed guests.
  • Nutmeg/pepper gas
  • Noise-generating devices (air horns, whistles, drums, bull horns, etc.)
  • Packages
  • Poles, bats, sticks, batons and selfie sticks
  • Rangefinders
  • Recreational motorized mobile devices
  • Seat cushions
  • Signs, posters or banners
  • Spray containers
  • Scooters (including commercial/rental)
  • Baby strollers
  • Suitcases
  • Structures (including tents)
  • Supports for signs and posters
  • Thermoses or thermal containers
  • Toy guns
  • Umbrellas
  • Unmanned aerial systems (drones)
  • Weapons of any kind (including clubs, slingshots, sand clubs, dice)

Items that may pose a security risk, as determined by security screeners, are also prohibited. This includes any other items deemed to pose a threat to the safety of the event or its participants.

Although the consumption of liquids is prohibited on Capitol grounds, water will be provided to ticketed guests. Please be sure to check the guidelines for any updates regarding fluid restrictions before attending the event.

The Capitol Police Board emphasizes that these measures are being taken to ensure a safe environment for all present. Participants should plan ahead to ensure they do not bring prohibited items and to streamline the security process.
