The disturbing 999 calls Kiena Dawes made before Ryan Wellings’ abuse drove her to suicide

The heartbreaking 999 calls Kiena Dawes made before her suicide offer a harrowing insight into the torment she experienced at the hands of her abusive partner.

In one disturbing audio clip, the 23-year-old tells emergency services that “blood is pouring from her head” as she tries to comfort the crying baby.

Dawes later wrote a suicide note saying: “Ryan Wellings killed me,” before leaving her nine-month-old daughter with a friend on July 22, 2022, and taking her own life on a railway line in Lancashire.

Violent Wellings was convicted of ABH and coercive control yesterday but was acquitted of manslaughter.

During the first of two calls to emergency services, Mrs. Dawes can be heard shouting “help” and calling out her address.

A few minutes later, she calls saying that her “phone is going to break because it’s covered in blood” and that the situation is “really bad.”

Her baby cries quietly in the background of the conversation, and then the young mother changes her tone to comfort the infant, saying, “It’s okay, baby, it’s okay.” Mom’s fine.

When asked if she needs an ambulance, Dawes responds worriedly: “I just woke up. I was unconscious. That’s absolutely. It’s pouring down my face. But I don’t know what happened. Well, I know what happened, but I don’t know what happened with the injury.

Just 11 days before her suicide, Ms Dawes suffered a horrific head wound after being attacked by her partner (Ms Dawes is seen with a bloody face in a photo released by police)

The telephone operator then asks the young mother to confirm the name and age of the person who did this to her, which she gives as 28-year-old Ryan Wellings.

In one incident, just 11 days before Ms Dawes’ death on July 11, 2022, Wellings “threw” his girlfriend into a radiator with such force that the device bounced off the wall, and then slammed the door in her face, knocking her out and leaving her and blood was pouring from her head.

Mrs. Dawes called the police at least five times to report Wellings’ domestic problems. Although she often downplayed her abuse of officers – due to threats from her partner – she made a statement regarding the assault that occurred on July 11.

In a separate part of the 999 call in court, abused Mrs Dawes is seen testifying that she was involved in a road accident on July 4, saying: “I don’t want to die.”

She told the operator she was thinking about her mental health and “didn’t even see the car in front.”

Mrs Dawes said: “I have really poor mental health which is getting much worse every day.

“I always keep writing notes in case I do it one day, but I have a baby and I don’t want to die. I want to be with my child. I can’t get my head together to work. I just want to sleep all the time.

Mrs. Dawes told the operator that she had been feeling mentally unwell for a long time and was taking medication for her condition.

When asked about suicide, she replied: “I don’t want to die. I just lost my mind. I need help. I try very hard not to feel this way.

The jury previously heard that Kiena has a diagnosis of emotionally unstable personality disorder (EUPD), which puts her at an increased risk of suicide compared to the general population.

Dr. Nicholas Kennedy told the jury that in February 2021, Kiena told health care workers that she had a long-standing fear of abandonment, which would make it difficult for her to leave a “toxic” relationship.

The doctor said she had already attempted to take her own life, which reflected her emotional state.

Prosecutors described how Wellings cruelly exploited Ms Dawes’ vulnerability due to her mental health and subjected her to two-and-a-half years of coercion and control during their relationship, as well as repeatedly using violence and insults towards her.

Wellings also defrauded her by failing to keep her job, providing and giving up 22 jobs, and depriving her of money while she worked two jobs. During lockdown he claimed £15,000 in Covid loans which he then spent on hotels, £1,800 golf clubs and drugs.

He repeatedly attacked his hairdresser fiancée, beat her while she was pregnant with his child, and also threatened to drown her in the bathtub, drill her teeth and “make her like Katie Piper” by throwing acid on her.

The two crimes Wellings was convicted of carry a maximum sentence of five years. It has since been revealed that both his mother, Lisa Green, and girlfriend, Emma Croft, are under police investigation for allegedly “coaching” him to give evidence.

Wellings’ defense lawyer insisted that the injuries Ms Dawes suffered before her death were caused by Wellings’ attempts to stop her or were inflicted accidentally.

They suggested that her descriptions of the landscape gardener’s behavior were inaccurate, false or exaggerated.

And they argued that while the young mother’s relationship with her partner was a “recipe for disaster”, Wellings was not guilty of driving her to suicide through domestic violence.

Ms Dawes, who had been struggling with poor mental health, first met Wellings in January 2020 and “he swept her off her feet”, her mother told the court.

Within a week, Wellings would have her name and face tattooed on his body, and after just three months he would have proposed.

But Dawes’ friends claim the “fairytale” relationship soon “turned into a nightmare” and Wellings brutally attacked her while she was pregnant.

The now 30-year-old would accuse Mrs. Dawes of cheating and, during one argument, threatened to throw his late father’s ashes out the window.

On Monday, Judge Altham thanked the jurors for their time after the verdict and excused them from further jury service if they wished for the next 15 years.

Wellings will be sentenced on Thursday.
