Sevilla player Kike Salas arrested for allegedly earning yellow cards to improve betting results

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) – Sevilla player Kike Salas has been detained by police for allegedly deliberately earning yellow cards to boost sports betting results, the Spanish league said Tuesday.

According to the Spanish news agency EFE, investigators suspect that Salas deliberately tried to get a yellow card from the referees in order to favor bets made by family members and friends in Spain.

The 22-year-old defender has received three yellow cards this season. He scored 10 goals in La Liga last season, including seven in the last eight games of the season he played.

The Spanish league told the Associated Press it would ask to take part in a judicial investigation into the player.

Sevilla stated that it was aware of the arrest and was closely monitoring the situation. Salas’ detention was first reported by the online newspaper El Confidencial.
