Death of Mahesh Kothe: Party leader Sharad Pawar dies of heart attack after holy bath of Prayagraj

Former Solapur mayor and NCP (SP) leader Mahesh Kothe died on Tuesday after suffering a heart attack while bathing in the Triveni estuary in Prayagraj, his aide said.

He was 60 years old.

The incident took place around 7.30 am at Triveni Sangam, at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and the legendary Saraswati river.

“Kothe went to triveni sangam to attend Shahi snan (on Makar Sankranti). He suffered a heart attack in the river water. He was taken to a medical facility but was pronounced dead, he said.

Kothe’s body will be taken to Solapur for last rites on Wednesday.

Kothe unsuccessfully contested against BJP’s Vijay Deshmukh in the November 20 Assembly elections in Solapur (North).

He left behind his wife and son.

There is intense frost in Prayagraj.

Seers belonging to various ‘akharas’ took the first ‘Amrit Snan’ at Maha Kumbh on the occasion of ‘Makar Sankranti’ and 1.38 crore devotees took bath at Triveni Sangam till 8.30 am.

NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar sent condolences on Kothe’s death.

“The youngest former mayor of Solapur and my old colleague Mahesh Kothe died tragically in Prayagraj. Mahesh Kothe has made a significant impact on the social and political landscape of Solapur city. With his death, Solapur has lost a dynamic and dedicated employee. We all sympathize with the mourning Kothe family. My sincerest condolences!” Pawar wrote on Twitter.
