Villager beaten to death in house on Lohri night

A 45-year-old resident of Shampur village was beaten to death in his home by four assailants, allegedly over a financial dispute, around 11 pm on Lohri evening.

Baljinder Puri, a farmer, sustained chest injuries and was rushed to GMCH, Sector 32, Chandigarh, where doctors declared him brought dead. He left behind a wife and three children.

At around 10 p.m., one of the attackers, Narinder, came outside Baljinder’s house and started playing loud music on his tractor. As he did not relent despite Baljinder’s opposition, he summoned the village sarpanch. After some time, the music system started working and the attacker organized another tractor and continued playing music.

Later, the sarpanch reached the spot and tried to solve the matter. Meanwhile, Narinder reportedly called Shampur residents Inderpreet Singh, Sachin, Prajwal and Jaswinder Puri. They all reportedly attacked the victim inside the house. When Baljinder lost consciousness, they fled the scene. Based on the statement of the deceased’s brother Rampal Puri, a case under section was registered at Sohana police station. 103 section 2 BNS.

DSP City-2 Harsimran Singh Bal said, “The suspect claims that there was a financial dispute with the deceased over property. The argument started with loud music being played outside the house. Suspect Narinder, 23, was arrested. He will be brought to court on Wednesday.”

The police have arrested former sarpanch Inderjeet, a resident of Shampur, his son Sachin, nephew Inderjeet Prajwal, Jaswinder Puri and Narinder Puri for assault.
