Man charged with murder in 2024 Dartmouth Hospital attack

Halifax Regional Police have upgraded a 32-year-old man to aggravated assault to second-degree murder following his death last year.

On May 9, 2024, police attended the East Coast Forensic Hospital in Dartmouth, NSW after a patient attacked another patient.

The victim, 69-year-old Allen Nickerson, suffered serious injuries and was taken to the hospital.

The next day, Mohamed Issak, 32, was charged with aggravated assault and taken back to hospital.

Nickerson died of his injuries on July 6.

The Nova Scotia Medical Examiner’s Service ruled the death a homicide, leading to increased charges.

Nickerson was found not criminally responsible by reason of mental disorder on a charge of first-degree murder in the death of his mother, Margaret Nickerson, in December 1994. East Coast Forensic Hospital runs a rehabilitation program for people who are not criminally responsible or incompetent to stand trial before the Nova Scotia justice system.

In January 2016, Issak was found not criminally responsible for assault with a weapon due to his mental disorder.

Issak was scheduled to appear in Dartmouth Provincial Court on Thursday.
