Police say the man killed outside a grocery store was trying to stop a robbery

PORTLAND, Ore. (KPTV/Gray News) – Police in Oregon have identified the victim in Monday’s fatal robbery at a Portland grocery store.

When police responded to reports of a robbery and shots fired at Fred Meyer’s on NE 102nd Avenue, they found an adult male who had been shot in the parking lot.

The man was identified Thursday as 47-year-old Jonathan Trent of Portland.

According to new information from Portland police, Trent witnessed the robbery and tried to stop it.

“People trying to act like heroes don’t have to end their lives in a senseless act,” said Hazelwood resident Christina.

His death is currently being investigated as a homicide, according to Portland police.

Trent’s brother said he was the father of an 11-year-old son and remembered him as a “good man.”

A member of the Trent Water Club was part of the set up online fundraising to help support his family.
