RICHMOND, Texas — A former Missouri City, Texas, police officer charged with manslaughter in connection with a fatal crash that killed a mother and her son was arrested Wednesday, according to the Fort Bend County, Texas, district attorney’s office.

Blademir Viveros, 27, was charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter and one count of aggravated assault.

His bail was set at $250,000 for two counts of involuntary manslaughter and $300,000 for aggravated assault, for a total of $800,000.

Authorities say Viveros responded to a report of an ongoing robbery in which he beat the victims on June 20.

According to police, a man armed with a gun approached the victim and stole $200 before fleeing in a silver Honda Civic.

Meanwhile, Viveros was heading east when Stewarts drove out of the Dollar Tree parking lot. That’s when the officer hit their vehicle, police said.

Both the mother and her son, Angela Stewart, 53, a Houston school counselor, and her 16-year-old son Mason Stewart died at the scene.

Authorities said Viveros was speeding and did not have his hazard warning lights on.

Family members told ABC’s Houston affiliate KTRK that the accident occurred on Mason’s 16th birthday.

On Wednesday, U.S. Attorney Jack Nugent shared the following statement from the Stewart family.

“We continue to mourn and be beyond words devastated by the tragic and senseless loss of our beloved wife, mother, brother and son. Angela and Mason were taken from us far too soon due to conscience-shocking actions by a police officer. Today’s indictment is only the first step towards accountability and should only be the beginning of holding the officer accountable for his misconduct. It does not cure the pain we feel every day. We offer our deepest thanks to those who continue to support us during this difficult time. We hope that our fight will be a constant reminder that life is precious and that justice is necessary. We will continue to honor the memory of Angela and Mason and support any action taken that will in any way help protect others from these types of devastating events. loss.”

The prosecutor’s office said a trial date for Viveros has not been set.
