Calcutta: A local Trinamool Congress leader was shot dead at close range on Broad Day on Saturday afternoon in Nodakhali in West Bengal’s South 24 district and his health condition is critical.

The critically injured local Trinamool Congress leader was identified as Krishnapada Mondal.

He was shot dead at close range while traveling alongside a motorcycle in the Nodakhali area.

Eyewitness statement

According to eyewitnesses, three unknown assailants, all of whom were probably strangers, shot Mondal at close range and fled.

He was rushed to a hospital in Kolkata, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

The police are investigating whether the attack on the leader of the ruling party was political or personal. The local police station used alerts about the three attackers who shot Mondal.

Reason for attack

However, a section of the local people said that fighting in the ruling party in the area could be the reason for the attack on Mondal.

Incidentally, Nodakhali falls under Diamond Harbor Lok Sabha constituency in South Parganas district, represented by Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.

This is the third incident this month in which a local Trinamool Congress leader was shot dead on Broad Day on the road. The first two incidents took place in Madah district in the northern sector of West Bengal.

In the first week of this month, Trinamool Congress councilor from English Bazar municipality in Malda district Dulal Sakar alias Babla was shot dead in a similar manner on the road.

Fighting in the ruling state party in the district is the main reason behind the murder, became apparent with the Malda Twin Trinamool Congress President and the party’s Hindi cell chief for the entire district Narendra Nath Tiwari, was identified and arrested as the main mastermind behind the murder.

On January 14, local Trinamool Congress leader Hasan Sheikh was shot dead at an administrative program in Kaliochak also in Malda district.
