Off-Duty Las Vegas officer, wife fatally shot man involved in Boulder City robbery

Off-Duty Las Vegas officer, wife fatally shot man involved in Boulder City robbery

A Las Vegas police officer and his wife shot and killed a man after they saw him punching and choking a woman in Boulder City, authorities said.

“We heard four shots, boom, boom, boom, boom and we turned around and there was a guy standing outside with his hands and everything like a gun in his hand and everything,” said Boulder City High School student Colin Weyrauch, who heard the commotion.

Boulder City police called Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Dispatch to report a shooting in a yard in the 700 block of 6th Street, LVMPD Capt. Kurt McKenzie told reporters.

McKenzie said the Force LVMPD investigation team took over and learned the officer and his wife were at their home when they heard a “commotion” coming from a neighbor’s yard.

“The officer outside the home came outside and observed the man mounting the woman and hitting her at the same time,” McKenzie said.

The officer told his wife to call 9-1-1 and went into the yard to separate the man and woman. He then escorted the woman from the yard and handed her to his wife in the officer’s yard.

McKenzie said the man from the incident followed the officer into the yard. The officer warned him not to get any closer or he would shoot, but the man continued to approach them.

Both the officer and his wife opened fire, hitting the man. According to McKenzie, medical staff pronounced him dead at the scene.

“It’s honestly upsetting just because it’s so close to where a lot of people live, where a lot of kids go to school, it’s very close to home, so it kind of scared me,” Weyrauch said.

McKenzie said details are still preliminary and investigators are looking into whether the initial backyard attack was domestic violence.

The department is treating the incident as an officer-involved shooting due to the officer’s role with LVMPD. This marks the first shooting for the department in the New Year.

Authorities say no officers from either department were injured and there is no current threat to the public.
