The Racing Post wrote: “The enormous affection of racing fans and punters for Down was felt as keenly in the press room as among the legion of owners, trainers, jockeys, breeders and grooms.”

Champion trainer Paul Nicholls also paid tribute, saying: “How sad, a leading man, a leading journalist always enjoyed my conversations with him, including last Friday at Cheltenham. RIP Alastair.”

The Racecourse Association added: “Everyone at the RCA is saddened to hear of the death of Alastair Down.

“His words, spoken over a long and successful career, brought the best of our sport to countless readers, inspiring many new fans and writers.

“We were delighted that his name was honored at the Cheltenham races last week.”

Down’s former colleague Derek Thompson said: “No one could have brought racing to life in print in such a tangible and electrifying way.”
