Retailleau said he would later travel to the northwestern city of Rennes, where a 5-year-old boy was shot in the head last week in another drug-related incident, according to local media.

In his interview, Retailleau condemned what he called the “Mexicanization” of France.

“These shootings are not taking place in South America, they are taking place in Rennes in Poitiers, in western France, once famous for its peace. We are at a turning point,” he said.

In recent years, France has been grappling with an increase in drug crime in Marseille, the historic center of the illegal drug trade, and in small and medium-sized towns across the country.
