Lawyer convicted of causing a fatal head-on accident

A family lawyer who admitted causing the death of a pensioner by dangerous driving has been sentenced.

Hamish Hickey (40) had picked up his two children from their school club and was driving towards Ampleforth on Thorpe Lane on July 26, 2022, when he collided head-on with a car driven by Michael Lupton (84), leaving him with extensive injuries.

York Crown Court heard that Hickey, of St Hildas Walk, Ampleforth, was driving at speeds in excess of 105km/h and was in the middle of the road when he reached the blind top when the accident occurred. Lupton later died in hospital.

On Friday, Hickey was sentenced to 23 months in prison and banned from driving for two years and 11 months.
