Eight people were killed and at least two were trapped after a concrete roof collapsed on them at a train station in northern Serbia.

The country’s Interior Minister Ivica Dacic initially reported that two people were taken to hospital with serious injuries as a result of the Novi Sad disaster, but later corrected the number to four.

Meanwhile, emergency services used two large excavators to help free two more people who survived but were trapped under the rubble.

Dacic said one of the people still trapped was a 14-year-old girl.

Ambulances and other rescue teams responded to the scene and rescuers searched for survivors.

CCTV footage shows people entering and leaving the building and sitting on benches when the concrete structure above the station entrance suddenly collapsed on them.

Dacic said: “This is an extremely difficult rescue operation that will last several more hours. About 80 rescuers from several cities work using heavy equipment.”

Parts of the building have recently been renovated, but Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic said the roof was built in 1964.

An investigation is underway to determine how the tragedy occurred.

Vucevic said: “It’s Black Friday for us, all of Serbia and Novi Sad.”

The N1 news channel reported that train departures from the station, located about 70 km northwest of the capital Belgrade, were suspended.
