Iowa City High School senior Siena Brown is the Press-Citizen’s newest student of the week.

Brown won 63.4% of 516 votes.

Brown is a dedicated student leader. She is an active participant in the environmental club and has served as co-president for the past two years, where she helped initiate a food waste composting project in the high school cafeteria. Brown is also vice president of The Golden Beaker, a nonprofit student organization that helps raise money for low-income elementary schools to purchase STEM materials. He will speak Friday at the World Food Prize Youth Institute in Des Moines, where he will talk to students and world leaders about food security.

“(Brown) is a dedicated student, a great student leader and a caring person,” said Mary Lestina, a science teacher at City High.

This week’s Student of the Week poll ended on Thursday, October 31. The new Student of the Week survey will be published on Monday, November 4.

Avery Riehl from Iowa City Liberty High School

Avery Riehl is a senior at Iowa City Liberty High and excels in several different ways. Riehl is the editor-in-chief of Liberty’s online newspaper, The Live Wire, and has been recognized as an Emerging Journalist by the Iowa High School Press Association. Riehl and the Live Wire staff were recently named the IHSPA All-Iowa News Team of the Year. He plans to continue his journalism studies at university. Riehl is also active in the National Honor Society, serving as the lead tutoring coordinator.

Adam Wade from Clear Creek Amana High School

Adam Wade is a senior at Clear Creek Amana High School, nominated by faculty members Kelsey Portwine and Jackie Baxter. When the school needed a responsible and trustworthy student to be a crossing guard, helping children cross the highway, Wade rose to the occasion and, through his hard work and reliability, ensured the students got to school safely.

About Student of the Week

The Press-Citizen’s Student of the Week is a weekly competition that runs throughout the academic year. Polling stations will open on Mondays and close on Thursdays. The competition is open to students from public and private high schools in Iowa.
