When the sergeant attempted to arrest him, Encalada-Cruz allegedly resisted, causing the two to fall into the street. During the struggle, the sergeant’s body-worn camera and handcuffs fell to the ground, and Encalada-Cruz broke free and fled. Officers later found him in a nearby ditch, where he was detained. Police reported that during the chase they found a bag of marijuana which he had thrown into his sweatshirt.

The sergeant suffered injuries to his elbows, hands and knees during the fight.

Encalada-Cruz was booked into the Lancaster County Jail on suspicion of third-degree assault on a peace officer, resisting arrest, possession of marijuana and three counts of violating a protection order.
