Rapid City man shot by police after allegedly pointing a gun at Pizza Hut officers

RAPID CITY, SD (KOTA) – At approximately 2:20 p.m. Friday, Rapid City Police officers were called to the Pizza Hut at the intersection of Haines Avenue and Anamosa Street on a report of an armed man threatening people with a firearm.

Police found the man in a first-floor apartment in The Place at Hainesway, where they said he was still pointing a gun at bystanders.

RCPD says officers urged the man to surrender and prepared to use non-lethal weapons to end the developing conflict, but the man reportedly escalated the situation.

“At some point during this altercation, the male pointed a gun out the window at the police officer,” said Don Hedrick, Rapid City Police Chief. “The officer shot at the person holding the gun, pointing it at him.”

Hedrick said the officer fired only one shot, wounding the man. Initial findings indicate that the man died after being taken to hospital.

We will provide more details as soon as information becomes available.
