HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. (KKTV) – Sentencing has been scheduled for the man responsible for the death of 13-year-old Aleksander Mackiewicz.

Mackiewicz’s life was cut short on March 6 at Highlands Ranch when 53-year-old Ruben Morones hit him with a car. The accident occurred at the Highlands Ranch. This week, Morones pleaded guilty to careless driving the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said.

“The defendant’s guilty plea is a step toward justice, but it does little to alleviate the profound loss felt by Alex’s family and the community,” Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly said. “Precious lives have been cut short as a result of careless choices, and we will work tirelessly to make our roads safer through public education and traffic enforcement. As sheriff, I am committed to working with the Mackiewicz family and our Legislature to strengthen the law and change the penalties for careless driving resulting in death.”

Morones will be sentenced on January 7.
