Newark: Students make bat boxes to prevent population decline

Despite their feelings, Ms Oldham said parents should not be concerned about their presence near school grounds as bats are nocturnal.

“They are not interested in people. They were just feeding and trying to fatten up as much as they could,” she added.

For the students involved in creating the bat boxes, the project provided the opportunity to do meaningful, hands-on work.

Penny Taylor, principal of Newark College, said: “We can have them assessed but it has to mean something.

“Doing a project like this where they see the vision, the end product and something that gives back to the client is exactly what we want them to feel when they go to work.”
