Bhopal:

An elderly man was killed on Saturday in an attack by wild elephants outside the buffer zone of the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve (BTR) in Madhya Pradesh, where 10 jumbos were killed in three days this week, an official said.

He added that the deceased was identified as Ramratan Yadav (65).

“Wild elephants trampled him to death when he went out to answer nature’s call outside the reserve early in the morning,” a BTR official said.

The incident took place in Devra village, Umaria divisional forest officer (DFO) Vivek Singh told PTI over the phone.

Earlier this week, ten elephants died in BTR in three days. Four wild elephants were found dead in Sankhani and Bakeli under Khitoli area of the reserve (BTR) on Tuesday, while four died on Wednesday and two on Thursday.

As officials previously reported, only three elephants out of a herd of 13 are currently alive.

When asked whether the man was killed by the other three pachyderms, the official replied that it was difficult to determine their identity.

This will only be known after an investigation, he added.

Another BTR ground official said the three remaining jumbos of the herd were moving towards a forest area in Katni district.

“This movement is unusual as it has never been found in BTR before,” a forest official said.

BTR covers Umaria and Katni districts in eastern Madhya Pradesh.
