Huntsville City Schools will install turf on all baseball and softball fields

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – Huntsville High School and Lee High School are the first two schools in the Huntsville City Schools district to begin installing grass fields for baseball and softball.

It is a $12 million project that started earlier this year.

Next year, three more schools will switch to grass pitches. School principals say this will not only make it easier to maintain the field, but will also help players prepare for the state championships, which are usually played on turf fields.

“The coaches are really excited about it,” said Craig Williams, director of communications for Huntsville City Schools. “Not just to help students get ready to compete in the playoffs because that’s what they’re going to be playing at this level. But also the student-athletes are really excited because the turf looks really nice, it makes our athletic facilities really exciting and a welcoming place for them, which they’re really excited about.”

Both fields at Lee High and Huntsville High will be ready for use by the start of the season.
