Authorities say a wrong-way driver killed one person and injured another in Lake County

A Umatilla man is dead and another injured in a three-car crash in Lake County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The crash occurred on State Route 44, west of Hammond Lane, just before midnight.

A Florida Highway Patrol spokesman says a Ram pickup was traveling westbound in the eastbound lane when the front of the pickup struck an eastbound motorcycle. The second motorcycle then swerved to avoid the crash and “lie down” in the roadway, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The driver of motorcycle No. 1, a 20-year-old man from Umatilla, was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim, also from Umatilla, was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the pickup truck was not injured, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

At this time, the causes of the crash are still under investigation.
