Utah Tech robbery suspect captured on camera fleeing scene after police arrive

Utah Tech police have arrested a sexual assault suspect who was caught on camera running from the scene.

Police confirmed that the victims of Friday morning’s attacks were young female students living in dormitories on campus.

Following an on-campus Halloween party, a former student allegedly unlawfully entered residence hall rooms, raising serious concerns for student safety.

KUTV spoke with Police Chief Wes LiCalzi about the ongoing investigation and the university’s response to support students and improve campus safety.

According to police, the suspect – 22-year-old Alex Barajas – gained access to the campus building using a card and entered three separate dorm rooms at Campus View Suites I.

Utah Tech students Noah and Hunter expressed shock at the events.

“It’s just terrible,” Noah said.

“It’s something that definitely should never have happened,” Hunter said. “It’s obviously disappointing. It’s something that needs to be fixed.”

Police reports show that around 3 a.m., after a Halloween dance, Barajas allegedly targeted three female students.

LiCalzi explained that the first call came from one of the victims, and when police arrived, two more victims came forward.

“The other two have already happened. And then, when the officer arrived, which happened very quickly, the suspect… . . they escaped through another exit,” Licalzi said.

Although card access is required to enter the building, LiCalzi noted that individual dorm rooms were likely left unlocked, allowing the suspect to enter. The victims lived on the same floor of the dormitory, although it is unclear whether they knew each other personally.

“They obviously need support now,” LiCalzi said. “We spent time talking to parents and the different resources they have, setting up trauma-informed interviews.”

The police chief also stressed the importance of campus safety and urged students to remain vigilant.

“We have tried to make it as easy as possible to contact us by phone. We just need this call to help,” he said. “Situational awareness is key; awareness of your surroundings can make a big difference.”

Anyone with additional information about this incident is asked to call Utah Tech Police at 435-627-4300.

Students affected by the events or seeking support can access counseling and resources at Utah Tech’s Booth Wellness Center by visiting or calling 435-652-7755.

The suspect has a criminal record, although not at the university. He faces three counts of rape, three counts of burglary, two counts of lewdness and one count of unlawful entry into a dwelling.

Utah State Police continue to investigate and additional updates will be provided as they become available.
