Life skills training in schools is essential, says Naivalurua – FBC News

Member of Parliament Ioane Naivalurua highlights the urgent need for life skills training in schools to equip young people with the tools to stand up to drugs.

Speaking during the speaker’s debate on drugs, he emphasized that prevention should start early and be consistently continued throughout the students’ development.

He adds that this will effectively address the problem of drug use, which often begins during adolescence.

“A review of the most effective programs shows that they are based on life skills training that aims not only at drug use, but also at equipping the child with broader life skills and social resistance. We teach kids how to say no to drugs and why to say no to drugs, not just once, but repeatedly.”

Naivalurua says an ongoing, structured approach to prevention in schools would help strengthen young people’s ability to make informed and healthy decisions.
