In Alexandra, an 11-year-old girl died, allegedly as a result of eating snacks from a spaza shop.

The girl’s mother and 4-year-old siblings are in hospital, and the mother’s condition is said to be critical.

The tragic accident is the latest in a series People getting sick from eating snacks bought in spaza shops.

A father describes how his daughter passed away

The father of the 11-year-old explained that his daughter complained about the taste of the snack she ate. She then asked his mom to try it too, and by the time his wife did, his 4-year-old had already eaten some of the snacks.

“After an hour, my daughter came out of the toilet complaining of chest pain. We took her to Masakhane clinic, but on the way she couldn’t breathe,” he said.

“When we got to the clinic, I dropped her off at the emergency room. After a few minutes, we were called and informed about her death,” he added.

The mother and son also confessed

The father further explained that during their stay at the hospital, his wife was admitted after she complained of pain.

He then called a neighbor to transport the 4-year-old for medical attention.

They are both currently in Edenvale Hospital.

Angry community members

Community members took matters into their own hands and attacked a store accused of selling contaminated goods.

They also called for a meeting with owners to discuss the issue of foreign spaza shops.
