West Bengal: Police said two minor girls were subjected to sexual violence by neighbors in West Bengal’s Hooghly and North 24 Parganas districts in the last 24 hours. According to a police officer, the perpetrators of both cases have been arrested.

In Mogra on North 24 Parganas, a 16-year-old girl was allegedly subjected to sexual violence by her neighbor when she was alone at home on Saturday evening. The accused was arrested and charged under relevant provisions of BNS and POCSO, police said. In a similar incident in Gaighata on Saturday, a neighbor abducted a 14-year-old girl while she was on her way to class. She was taken to a nearby jungle and allegedly raped before being dumped near her home later that evening, police said, adding that the girl’s medical examination was scheduled for Monday.

After a speedy trial, the father of Gaighata’s victim demanded the death penalty for the accused. Reacting to the Mogra incident and other similar incidents, TMC legislator Byapari said, “Had I been present, I would have broken and sprained the hands and feet of the accused and then handed him over to the police.”

He advocated harsh punishment for those who commit crimes against women, adding: “If any action is taken against me for treating those involved in heinous crimes against women as they deserve, I am ready to face the consequences. I won’t go back on my words.”

State Minister Firhad Hakim said: “Any crimes against women must be dealt with severely, with no mercy towards the perpetrators. It is a social evil and such crimes often occur in other states. We must take a zero-tolerance approach to providing a safe environment for our sisters and daughters.”

BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh from Siliguri criticized the TMC government, claiming that crimes against women have become a daily occurrence in West Bengal under its rule.

“The Mamata Banerjee regime has failed to instill fear in molesters and perpetrators of violence. The perpetrators were emboldened,” he said.
