DETROIT (WXYZ) – The father of a three-year-old boy has been charged after the boy allegedly grabbed his father’s unsecured gun and shot himself.

It happened on Wednesday (October 30) on Detroit’s west side just before 1 a.m. at a home in the 4000 block of Grand Street. Investigators say the boy found his father’s gun and shot himself in the stomach. According to authorities, the child was in the care of his father at the time of the incident. He was privately transported to hospital and is expected to recover.

The father, 29-year-old Richard Williams, was charged with causing injury by unsafe storage. He was arraigned last Friday in 36th District Court and given a $50,000 cash bond. He has three other court hearings scheduled later this month.

“Another day. “Another child injured by a loaded, unsecured gun,” prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a statement. “Tomorrow will be different if we do not pay attention and take this issue seriously. These are our children – and if we can’t unite for them, who will we unite for?”
